Technical drawings have existed for centuries, long before the computerised manufacturing methods of today. Prior to the invention of computers, manufacturers relied heavily on technical drawings as their primary source of information. We typically deal with a subtype of technical drawings known as engineering drawings in the prototyping and manufacturing world, and these contain information like material and finishing requirements, part information, and — most importantly — 2D and 3D views of the part from multiple angles with dimensions and tolerances. The need for precise communication in the preparation of a functional document distinguishes technical drawing from the expressive drawing of the visual arts. Artistic drawings are subjectively interpreted; their meanings are multiply determined. Technical drawings are understood to have one intended meaning.

The book aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of technical drawings. It elucidates new techniques and their applications in a multidisciplinary approach. It deals with various topics like method of presentation, drawing instruments, lettering principles and dimensioning. It also focuses on freehand drawing, projections in engineering drawings, descriptive geometry, pictorial drawing and construction. It glances at the various subfields of this subject along with technological progress that have future implications. Coherent flow of topics, student-friendly language and extensive use of examples make the book an invaluable source of knowledge. It is an essential guide for those who wish to pursue this discipline further.
